‘Turning over a new leaf’ is a strange phrase. If, in reality, we tried to do that, we’d break the leaf off its stem. So, does the expression refer to the ‘leaves’ of a book? Does it suggest turning over to a fresh page?

And, if that’s the case, is it a book we’re supposed to be writing ourselves? Or a tome filled with advice by another author? Is your life-story already written? Or, in turning over a new leaf, can you make a unique mark on the world?
